Wednesday, August 30

Today is Wednesday of WEEK 2. The second part of the reading is due today, and I hope you will get some good ideas for a story you want to (re)tell! Here is a link to this week's assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Introductions. I'm guessing I might finish up reading all the Introduction posts today (or at least come close!), and it has been so much fun meeting everybody and getting to know more about you. I also saw that people have started the Week 2 commenting, which is nice to see. If you set up your Blogger comment notifications (under Settings - Email), you will receive emails when people leave comments on your blog.

Extra Credit: Wikipedia. Some people have already started doing Wikipedia Trails for extra credit, and it's a fun option to keep in mind whenever you are doing any reading at all for the class. If you see something that grabs your attention that you want to know more about, you can turn that into a Wikipedia Trails post. Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

Project Stack. I've got a couple of project assignments in the Stack, so I'll get to those in the morning and I'll update the Stack throughout the day. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Words from India. Today's word from India is BUDDHA, which is a Sanskrit word meaning "awakened."

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: Legends of Fire. Deep in the woods is a tavern, and sitting around a table in that tavern are four wild-looking men: dragon-hunters! Listen to the stories of what happened when they confronted mighty dragons all over the world, from Scotland to Turkey to India.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Fairy Tales of the Allied Nations by Edmund Dulac. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. Dulac also did the beautiful illustrations:

Story of the Day. Today's story is from Aesop's fables: Belling the Cat. This is a fable about the difference between having an idea and actually carrying it out.

Video: The video for today is Empathy: The Human Connection to Patient Care . Find out more at OnBeing.org. I thought this would be a good video to share as so many of you are future medical professionals.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready to write: I will write without fear. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: Come to Kaufman 221B today at 4PM to learn about teaching English abroad (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

August 30: Jacques-Louis David: Today marks the birthday of the great French painter Jacques-Louis David in the year 1748; you can find out more about his life and career at Wikipedia. David is famous for his paintings on Greek and Roman themes, and one of my favorites is the Intervention of the Sabine Women when they stand between their husbands on the one side and their fathers and brothers on the other, insisting that they make peace.
