Sunday, November 5

Today is Sunday of Week 11. That means it is time to finish Week 11, and you might also want to do some extra credit and/or get started on next week's assignments. You can find all the assignments at the Class Calendar.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Finishing the class. (repeat announcement) Now that there are just three weeks left (plus Dead Week), you can mix-and-match to get the points you need, choosing the assignments you like best. It's good to make a plan now for how you want to finish up, and as soon as you get the points you need (410 A, 360 B, 320 C), you are done with the class. When you are done, just fill out this form to let me know... and congratulations to the people who have finished already!

Project Stack. I'll check my email periodically today so that you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. The last day of the week is a great day to do the review/backup extra credit option, especially if you didn't get a chance to read through the announcements last week. Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, some NaNoWriMo / Daylight savings humor from Debbie Ridpath Ohi. Enjoy your hour!

H.E.A.R.T.. Here's a great use of an animated gif: Breathing Recalibration.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Indian Epics class: Double Trouble: The Adventures of Kusha and Lava. Rama has some special bedtimes stories for his twin boys... in which the boys themselves become the heroes.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Celtic Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. This will be one of the reading options in Myth-Folklore in Weeks 12 and 13.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from the Jataka tales of India: The Golden Goose. This might remind you of the Aesop's fable of the goose that laid the golden egg.

Video: The video for today is How boredom can lead to your most brilliant ideas. You can read the transcript at the TED site.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready for the end of the semester: Embrace challenges! You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: The Campus Coffee Crawl has started, and goes until November 17 (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

November 5: Guy Fawkes Night. This is Bonfire Night, commemorating the occasion when the so-called Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was prevented. The holiday is named after Guy Fawkes, but it is not in his honor: Guy Fawkes, a Catholic, was involved in a plot to blow up the House of Parliament in England. The plot was discovered, and Guy Fawkes, along with the other conspirators, was condemned to death. Find out more at Wikipedia; this Gunpowder Plot Galop is from 1856.
