Wednesday, November 8

Today is Wednesday of Week 12. The second part of the reading is due today, and I hope you are getting some good ideas for a story you want to tell! Here is a link to this week's assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. Yesterday I read and replied to all the assignments turned in on Saturday, so now I am working on the Sunday assignments. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. While you are doing the reading, you might see something you are curious about: if so, do a Wikipedia Trail to learn more, and you can get extra credit for it! Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, here is something from OU's English department: Elemental Haiku. There is a haiku for every element in the periodic table!

Fairy Tales. We are very lucky that so many talented writers have collected and retold fairy tales from around the world: Fairy Tale Composers and Collectors. Some of you in Myth-Folklore may be reading books by Joseph Jacobs this week, and you will see him here, second from the top on the right:

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Indian Epics class: Parvati's Marriage Counseling Service. The goddess Parvati wants to help you find love and happiness. Her clients include Damayanti and a mysterious "Black Widow," plus you get to learn about Parvati's own tumultuous life with her husband Shiva.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Tales of the Enchanted Islands of the Atlantic by Thomas Wentworth Higginson. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. There is also a free LibriVox audiobook available for this one.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from the Buddhist jatakas: The Brave Quail Chick. A small quail uses the power of righteousness to confront a forest fire.

Video: The video for today is The Canterbury Tales ("California Dreamin" by the Mamas and the Papas). Find out more mash-up vidoes at Amy Burvall's YouTube channel.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is moving ahead, no matter what: Obstacles teach you to leap higher. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: There will be performances of the Me Too Monologues in Meacham at 8PM tonight and again tomorrow night (details). This video promo for the show is by Josh from Indian Epics!

November 8: Thomas Bewick. Today marks the death in 1828 of one of my favorite Aesop authors and illustrators: Thomas Bewick. You can read his Select Fables of Aesop, published in 1784, for free online; below is an animated gif with some of the illustrations:
