Friday, December 1

HAPPY FRIDAY! You have reached the end of Week 14, and the final countdown is on: class will be over one week from today, at noon next Friday. Here is a link to the class calendar; after you finish this week's assignments, you can start in on next week's assignments if you want; those assignments are ready to go.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Finishing class. If you have been doing the assignments each week, you should be ready to finish up now at the end of Week 14! There is also a full week of assignments available during Dead Week if you are making up some missed assignments from earlier on. Make sure you have your plan in place for finishing up (410/A, 360/B, 320/C), and as soon as you have the points you need, you are done. Let me know by filling out this form.

Project Stack. On Thursday, I got through all the Week 13 assignments, so now I am working on the Week 14 assignments, focusing on the people who have not finished the class yet. Especially if you will be turning in a Week 15 project too, the sooner you can get that Week 14 assignment turned in, the better! While you are waiting on comments back from me, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. Friday is always a good day for famous last words! Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, here are the 17,000 folk and blues recordings collected by Alan Lomax; you can access the Recordings Archive here.

Words from India. This English word comes from the Hindi word for five, pancha: PUNCH, traditionally made with five ingredients.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: Siren, City in the Clouds. Welcome to the world of Siren, a city in the sky, founded in the year 2433, which hovers on a floating island. It may be far away from the Earth, but the adventures of the city's inhabitants echo the fairy tales of Earth's ages-old storytelling traditions.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Roman Legends: A Collection of the Fables and Folklore of Rome by R. H. Busk. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. These are not stories from ancient Roman culture; these are Italian folktales and stories, all about the eternal city: Rome.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from Aesop's fables: The Thieves and the Rooster. If you have ever gotten mad at your alarm clock, this fable is for you!

Video: The video for today is Maati Baani's Hiye Kaya Mein with the marvelous folksinger Mooralala Marwada. Find out more at the YouTube page, and you can read more about the mystical poet and singer Kabir at Wikipedia.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready for today's dragons: Every day new and larger dragons come along. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: Come enjoy The Harry Potter Experience in Couch tonight, 7PM-10PM (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

December: Latin Christmas Carols. As one of my Latin hobbies, I collect Christmas carols and holiday songs in Latin, and I've got a special blog — Gaudium Mundo — where you can find a different Latin Christmas carol or holiday song for each day of the month of December... beginning with Rudolphus on December 1. I even found a Gregorian chant (plain-chant) version of Rudolph! Here's the page about Rudolphus rubrinasus, and you can listen to the plain-chant version at Soundcloud:
