Sunday, September 23

Today is Sunday of Week 5, so that means today is the day to finish up the Week 5 assignments. Some of you will be starting on Week 6 today too: have fun with the new reading!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Extra credit. There are all kinds of extra credit options which I hope can be fun and/or useful, and it never hurts to bank some time now, earlier in the semester, before things get really busy later on! All the extra credit options are here. You can use the Tech Tips to tinker with your blog, for example, or learn more about Canvas. Doing a Storybook? Use the Wikipedia Trails to do some research.

Project Pages in Canvas. You may have noticed a new link in the Canvas navigation: next to the Blogs, there's a link for Projects too. That will take you to a page with the Project slideshow for your class. I'll be updating the slides if people change their web design, title, etc. If you notice that I have not updated your slide, you can let me know!

Project Stack. I'll check my email periodically today so that you can check the stack to make sure I received your email. The sooner you get that assignment turned in, the sooner you'll get comments back from me next week. There are some additional notes about project assignments in yesterday's announcements.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Here's a wonderful Wikipedia Trail from Arti's blog: From Damascus to Sumerian Religion.

Featured Storybook. This Storybook is about one of the most famous legends of India: Gambling and Curses Lose: Real Love Wins. The heroine is Damayanti and her husband, Nala, two star-crossed lovers who endure much to win their happily-ever-after.

India Video. This video is about the avatars of Lord Vishnu, the Dashavatar. One of them, Rama, is the hero of the Ramayana, and another, Krishna, is a hero of the Mahabharata.

Myth Video. Here's a video about comic book universes and the films made about them: The Mythic Potential of Comic Book Films.

Myth Item. Consider also the storytelling power of Legos: The Brick Testament.... including the Garden of Eden of course:

Writing. Click on the link to learn about Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling. (I've transcribed the graphic there.)

And here is some "oh no, it's the end of the week again" humor... because we all know this feeling: Stages of Procrastination.

Growth Mindset Cats. This cat knows learning can be social: I get support from my peers.

Here's a great video about connecting: Empathy: The Human Connection. I would especially urge those of you going into the health professions to take a look at this one!

Event on Campus. The Musical Mosaic concert will be at 3PM this afternoon in Sharp Hall, including excerpts from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet and Ravel's L’Enfant et Les Sortileges / The Child and the Spells (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

September 23: Baroness Orczy. Today marks the birthday in 1865 of Baroness Emma Magdolna Rozália Mária Jozefa Borbála "Emmuska" Orczy de Orci, a Hungarian-born English novelist and playwright. She wrote a book of Hungarian Fairy Tales that you can read online, and you can find out more about her life and work at Wikipedia. Have you heard of The Scarlet Pimpernel? She wrote that! Here she is in 1913:
