Saturday, October 27

Today is Saturday of Week 10. I hope you are having a nice weekend! Here is a link to the Week 10 assignments and also Week 11 in case you are working ahead — and working ahead is always good. :-)

Class Procedures and Reminders

Progress Meter. Remember when there was just a sliver of green in the progress meter? Now the semester is about two-thirds over!

I know some of you would like to finish the semester early, so do some extra credit this weekend if you can. Finishing up the class before Thanksgiving is very do-able.

Project Stack. On Friday, I read and replied to all the Week 9 assignments in the stack, leaving some Week 10 and Week 11 assignments that will be at the top of the stack for Monday. You can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Learning about Twine is one of the Story Lab options, so I was excited to see that Melanie had published a Twine story for that this week: yay Twine! How to Escape a Pack of Wolves.

Featured Storybook. This is a project that connects up with the Native American weeks in Myth-Folklore, and with Halloween coming soon! Monsters of the Native Americans. These are bedtime stories... but dark ones, stories of the mythical monsters of three different Native peoples.

Myth Video. And because you can never have too many tricksters: Hermes and Loki.

India Video. Here is some beautiful music from Maati Baani for the weekend: Tore Matware Naina.

India Item. Here is a word that comes to English from India: SWASTIKA. It was grotesquely misappropriated by the Nazi movement, but the swastika has been and continues to be a sign of prosperity, su-astika, throughout India.

Writing. Of course I hope you will have many good writing days!

And if you find yourself in a negative space, here are some tips for managing negative thoughts.

Growth Mindset Cats. Don't let fear stop you: just keep going.

Here are some philosophical thoughts about the power of wonder.

Event in Oklahoma City. I usually focus on campus events, but I wanted to share this Oklahoma City event: a production of Alice in Wonderland by the Oklahoma City Ballet (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

October 27: Karva Chauth. Today is the northern Indian festival of Karva Chauth. You can find out more at Wikipedia, and this holiday was also the subject of an Indian Epics Storybook in a previous class: Lifelong Devotion: Tales of Love at Karva Chauth.

If you follow the Twitter today for Karva Chauth, you will see some extraordinary mehndi designs, like these:
