Tuesday, October 16

Today is Tuesday of Week 9. Here is a link to the Week 9 assignments and also a link to Week 10 for those of you who are working ahead.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Read with attention. Reading with attention will mean different things for different people. It might mean closing all your other browser tabs. It might mean reading out loud. It might mean taking notes by hand while you read. The key is to figure out the best way(s) for you to focus your attention while you read so that you can get the most value from your time spent reading. Experiment with different strategies so that you can find your own best methods for focusing!

Project Stack. If you turned in something last week before Thursday noon, you should have comments back from me, and I hope to get through Thursday plus Friday and Saturday today too: fingers crossed! Meanwhile, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. This showed up in Eric's blog last week: so cute! Maybe it will inspire you too: Attack the Day.

Featured Storybook. The jackal is a trickster in some African cultures; you can learn about his antics here: Jackals of Telekeshi: Tales of the Watering Hole. The jackal is a known troublemaker, and the lion, baboon, and giraffe all have stories to tell about him.

Myth Video. The West African trickster Anansi is now famous in the Caribbean too: Anansi the Spider.

India Video. Here's another video from Epified: Epic Disguises.

India Item. And here is a proverb from India: When the house is built, the carpenter is forgotten.

Writing. They use all the letters of the alphabet! English Pangrams. My favorite is: The five boxing wizards jump quickly. But the quick brown fox is the most famous:

And here is some reading advice from Hermione: When in doubt, go to the library!

Growth Mindset Cats. This cat is ready to read: I will train my brain by reading books.

Here's a TED talk from Dan Gilbert on The Surprising Science of Happiness.

Event on Campus. There will be a mini-star party (with refreshments!) in Bizzell HCLC from 8PM-9PM  (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

October 16: Oscar Wilde. Today marks the birthday in the year 1854 of the great Irish writer, Oscar Wilde. You can read more about Oscar Wilde's life and career as a writer in this detailed Wikipedia article. My favorite works by Oscar Wilde are his fairy tales, which you can read online at SurLaLune. The image below is an illustration by Jessie King for Wilde's fairy tale entitled The Fisherman and His Soul:

And here is a animated version of his story The Selfish Giant. This was one of my favorite films when I was little!
