Tuesday, November 13

Today is Tuesday of Week 13. Here is a link to the Week 13 assignments (and Week 14 if you are working ahead!).

Class Procedures and Reminders

Week 13 Reading. It's more stories from the British Isles in Myth-Folklore, and the free choice continues in Indian Epics: epics, jatakas, or other Indian stories. I hope you will enjoy the stories this week!

Project Stack. I've still got some Friday assignments in the stack to read today, and then I'll start working on the Saturday assignments. Meanwhile, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. It can be fun finding a good graphic to go with your reading notes; here's a fun elephant that Eric found to with an elephant jataka: The King's White Elephant.

Featured Storybook. This Storybook was written by a Public Relations major: Image.PR: India's highest ranked PR Firm. Shakti does not hesitate to take on the most difficult clients in ancient India: there is no scandal that she cannot handle!

As the semester winds down, I am repeating favorite items from earlier announcements; these items come from Week 4:

Myth Video. This is a good one from Crash Course: Mythical Horses.

Myth Item. Here's a map of America's Mythical Lake Monsters including the giant octopus that is supposed to live in Lake Thunderbird right in Oklahoma!

India Video. Here's a TED talk by my favorite mythologist, Devdutt Pattanaik: Not Quite Avatar.

India Item. For a new take on Ravana, here's a fantastic comic book in Bizzell: Kubera: The Lord of Wealth. Kubera is Ravana's half-brother; you can see them both there on the cover:

Writing. To write well, you need both kinds of thinking: logic and imagination. Learn more here: Divergent-Convergent-Lateral Thinking.

And here's something from Maurice Sendak to inspire your reading this week: Reading is fun!

Growth Mindset Cats. Curiosity is a force that cannot be denied: Curiosity breeds curiosity.

Yes, it's an ad for Android... but it's also an adorable video: Friends Furever. Be together. Not the same.

Event on Campus. Curator Hadley Jerman will be leading a Ticket to Ride gallery talk today at 1PM in the Fred Jones Jr. Museum (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

November 13: Vine Deloria. Today marks the death in 2005 of the Sioux Indian author and political activist Vine Deloria, Jr. (he was born in 1933). You can read more about Vine Deloria's life and career in this Wikipedia article. Deloria is most famous for his 1969 book Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto. You can listen to an interview from 1972, and then another interview in 2005 filmed shortly before his death.
