Wednesday, November 7

Today is Wednesday of Week 12. Here is a link to Week 12 (plus a link to Week 13 for those of you who are working ahead).

Class Procedures and Reminders

Extra Credit. While you are doing the reading, you might see something you are curious about: if so, do a Wikipedia Trail to learn more, and you can get extra credit for it! Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

Project Stack. If you turned in something before noon on Sunday, you should have comments back from me, and you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Here's another fun extra credit, making your growth mindset motto into a graphic, like Haley did here: You make your own merit!

Featured Storybook. Here's a past project from Indian Epics: Sita's Life: A Song of Valor. These are the adventures, both happy and sad, of Sita's exemplary life as told in later years by her son, Master Lava, the village teacher.

As the semester winds down, I am repeating favorite items from earlier announcements; these items come from Weeks 1 and 2:

Myth Video. Here's the goddess Hera as a modern housewife: The Mundane Goddess. (Yes, that's Uma Thurman!)

Myth Item. This is a medieval tapestry mash-up with Star Wars: Bayeux Star Wars (see that link for a translation of the Latin).

India Video. And here's a musical mash-up, where Michael Jackson's Don't Stop meets the Bollywood hit song Chaiyya Chaiyya, featuring Vidya with Sam Tsui, and Shankar Tucker on clarinet. (The Chaiyya Chaiyya song came to Hollywood too; Spike Lee used it for the soundtrack of Inside Man.)

Writing. I hope this class has inspired you to try different kinds of writing experiments: Why We Need Creative Writing.

It's not just for kids; people of all ages can enjoy an Imagination Celebration:

Growth Mindset Cats. This cat knows that being different can give you power.

I was inspired to make that cat by this graphic by sketchnote guru Sylvia Duckworth: 10 Things We Can Learn from Superheroes.

Event on Campus. There's a Sooners Helping Sooners Bake Sale today from 10AM-2PM outside the Union (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

Diwali 2018. One of the most festive celebrations in the Hindu calendar is Diwali, the "Festival of Lights," which takes place over a five-day period, and you can read about each day of the festival at Wikipedia. The word Diwali is a contraction of "Deepawali," which means "row of lamps," and one of the Diwali rituals is the lighting of candles and lamps to symbolize the triumph of light over the dark. The image below shows a Diwali festival in Chandigarh, India.

You will see lots about Diwali at Twitter today, and here's a video from Epified: Diwali:
