Tuesday, March 26

Today is Tuesday of Week 10. Here is a link to this week's assignments (plus a link to Week 11 for those of you who are working ahead). I hope you will enjoy this week's new reading!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Planning the semester. Now that it is Week 10, that means there are five more weeks of the semester, plus Dead Week. It's a good idea to plan out the rest of the semester now so that you can figure out what you want to read, how many stories you want in your project, along with whatever other assignments you want to do to reach your goal. You might also find this Progress Chart helpful, and if you have any questions as you mix-and-match your way to the end of the semester, let me know!

Project stack. If you turned in something before Sunday noon at the start of break (March 17), you should have gotten comments back from me now. I'll keep working my way through the stack in the order received, and you can always check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog stream. I thought this was an amazing picture of the goddess Durga; it's from a reading notes post at Cecilia's blog.

Free Book Online. Today's free book is Coyote Stories by Humishuma, also known as Mourning Dove; you can read more about her life and work at Wikipedia.

Free Audiobook. Today's free audiobook is the Finnish epic Kalevala, The Land of the Heroes by Elias Lönnrot, translated by W. F. Kirby.

Featured Storybook. Are you into scary stories? Here's a Storybook for you: Ghost Stories: Old Lady Hudson. The Hudson home is haunted, no doubt about it. Will Old Lady Hudson's ghost ever find peace in the afterlife?

Myth Video. Here's Mike Rugnetta of Crash Course back in his PBS days: Do All Horror Monsters Fit Into 5 Categories?.

India Video. And here's an Epified videos about demons, but not bad ones; these are Virtuous Demons.

India Item. I'm excited about a new novel that was just published, The Prince, by one of my favorite Indian authors, Samhita Arni... and I thought you might enjoy this newspaper article she recently wrote about novels and mythology: Obsessed with myth.

Writing. And here are some thoughts from Grant Snider about keeping A Writer's Notebook.

And here's a nice graphic about the power of books.

Growth Mindset Cats. These cats are using their curiosity in order to grow.

Growth also requires practice. To be specific, it requires deliberate practice.

Event on Campus. There will be a talk this evening about the Rohingya and Uighuyr Muslims at 7PM in the Heritage Room in the Union, sponsored by the Muslim Students Association (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

March 26: Leonard Nimoy. Today marks the birthday of the actor Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock in the Star Trek franchise; he was born in 1931, and he left this world in 2015. Nimoy was Jewish, and the famous Vulcan salute that he invented for Spock was inspired by Jewish tradition; it has its own Wikipedia article!
