Monday, April 15

Today is Monday of Week 13. No kidding: Week 13! Here is a link to the Week 13 assignments and also Week 12 if you are finishing that up during the grace period this morning.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. As always, the stack is huge on Monday! You can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Choose your grade. A couple of people wrote me this weekend to ask if it really is okay to stop the class when they have a grade of B or C, and of course that is okay! In fact, it's great: if finishing early in this class can help you cope with all your other end-of-the-semester obligations, I'm very glad about that. So, as soon you are done with the points you need for your desired grade (410-A, 360-B, 320-C), just fill out the "Finished!" form in Canvas and you're done!

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. I always enjoy the Wikipedia Trails, and here's one from Daana which goes from Shiva Nataraja to Serpent, by way of the caduceus:

Free Book Online: The free book today is Village Folktales of Ceylon by H. Parker.

Free Audiobook. Today's free book is A House Of Pomegranates by Oscar Wilde. One of Oscar Wilde's many literary talents was his ability to write beautiful fairy tales!

Featured Storybook. This Storybook is a great example of how you can bring together stories from different cultures into a single project: Desperate Goddesses: Life on Mythological Lane. Izanami-no-Mikoto, the Japanese goddess of creation, has left the world of the living long behind, but she still watches over the desperate goddesses of Mythological Lane — Aphrodite, Pele, Ishtar, and Devi.

Myth Video. From Epified, here is a short video on Creation Stories of the world, including India.

India Video. And here's a Crash Course video, this time about India: Indian Pantheons.

Myth Item. This English word comes from Greek myth: TITANIC, referring to the huge Greek gods called Titans.

India Item. Here is a word from India that we use in English: CALICO, as in calico cat. English "calico" is from the name of the city of of "Calicut" on the Malabar coast of India in Kerala.

And some reading advice from Tyrion Lannister: Books are better.

Writing. It's a communications paradox: A Brief History of Writing Technology.

Growth Mindset Cats. Today's cat is a creative cat: I made a new thing.

Taking notes and being creative go hand-in hand: A Writer's Notebook.

Event on Campus. Come see OU’s Wind Symphony perform works by composers: Hindemith, Holst, Oquin and more in Metamorphosis at 8PM in Sharp Concert Hall (details). Here is the piece by Holst that they will perform:

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

April 15: Leonardo da Vinci. Today marks the birthday in the year 1452 of the remarkable Leonardo da Vinci, who was a genius in math, science and engineering, as well as being a famous artist. You can read about his remarkable life and career in Wikipedia. You probably know his "Vitruvian Man," so here's a TED video about that, and Vitruvian Man also has a Wikipedia article.
