Monday, April 22

Today is Monday of Week 14. I hope everybody had a great weekend! Here is a link to the Week 14 assignments, plus a link to the the Week 13 assignments if you are using the grace period this morning to finish up last week's work.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Last week of class! Yes, this is it: Week 14 is the last full week of class. Hopefully you'll be able to finish up this week. If you need to make up some missing assignments from earlier in the semester, there's also a week's worth of assignments available during Dead Week. You can find out how that works here at the class calendar.

Project Stack. The stack is huge right now, and I'll be working through the assignments in the order that they were turned in, starting with assignments turned in last week. Meanwhile, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Being able to embed videos in blog posts and webpages is one of the most fun things about writing for the web, and Corona did a blog post here with some video music that she also used at her Portfolio: Stealth Music.

Free Book Online. Today's free book is The Flame Tree and Other Folklore Stories from Uganda by Rosetta Baskerville.

Free Audiobook. Today's free audiobook is The Talking Thrush and Other Tales from India by William Crooke and W. H. D. Rouse with illustrations by W. H. Robinson.

Featured Storybook. This Storybook is inspired by a holiday called Karva Chauth: Lifelong Devotion: Tales of Love at Karva Chauth. Karva Chauth is an Indian holiday in which women honor the power of love in their lives. In this Storybook, you will spend the holiday with Sita, Ahalya and Radha as they reflect on their dramatic love lives.

India Video. For India, here's a TED talk by Shabaz Hussain The Art of Playing Tabla.

India Item. Did you ever play the game "Chutes and Ladders" when you were a kid? It's originally a game from India: Moksha Patam. Here's an example from around the year 1800:

Myth Video. This is a video about the Jamaican trickster Anansi from the National Museum of Jamaica: Anancy and the Snake.

Myth Item. I really like this proverb from South AfricaDawn does not come twice to wake us.

Writing. Science or science fiction? Here's a fun cartoon from Tom Gauld.

Writing. This is a proverb about writing; more about the saying here: The Lion Learns to Write.

Growth Mindset Cats. This cat knows knows that the process of discovery is often messy and non-linear.

In the spirit of discovery, Matt Harding has been dancing around the world for years; here's one of his videos from back in 2006: Where in the world is Matt?

Event on Campus. Greek Week starts today with a party on the South Oval from 2PM-4PM (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

April 22: Earth Day. Today, April 22, is Earth Day. You can read about this holiday in Wikipedia. In honor of Earth Day, I wanted to reflect on how much paper we have saved in this class. Based on the amount of writing and number of students, I would estimate that we have saved about 9000 pages, or 18 reams of paper, this semester. So, by working online like this, we have saved a tree! You can follow all the #EarthDay news at Twitter
