Thursday, April 4

Today is Thursday of Week 11... which means it is Storytelling day for a lot of you! Here is a link to the Week 11 assignments, plus a link to Week 12 for anyone who is working ahead.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Author's note. If you are writing a story today, take an extra few minutes to add something really good to your author's note! You've gotten a lot of practice working on your author's notes for your class project, and you can use those same strategies when you write the author's note for a story at your blog.

Project Stack. If you turned in your project on or before 8PM on Sunday, you should have comments back from me now, and I'll keep working on those Sunday evening assignments today. As always, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. I noticed this beautiful illustration of Krishna and Devaki in Elena's story post for this week: Killer Kansa. The artist is Marianne Stokes:

Comic Book On Reserve. Today's comic book is Monkey Stories: Jataka Tales of Wile and Wisdom.

Free Audiobook. Today's free audiobook is The Scottish Fairy Book by Elizabeth W. Grierson.

Featured Storybook. Here's a seasonal Storybook to mark the arrival of spring: Changeling of the Seasons. In stories about spring, summer, autumn, and winter, you will learn the strange history of the fairies and the human race itself.

Myth Video. This is a video from the Smithsonian: The Dakhká Khwáan Dancers.

India Video. And here is a video about a dance tradition from India: Revelations: Celebrating LGBTQ Stories Through Bharathanatyam.

India Item. This is a place name with Indian origins: the name of the city-state Singapore is from Malay Singapura, which is of Sanskrit origin: Simhapuram, which means "Lion-City." Here's a picture of Singapore's merlion:

Writing. When you tell your story today, unleash your imagination! In the words of Carl Sagan: Without imagination, we go nowhere.

And if you need a nap, take a nap! How Long to Nap.

Growth Mindset Cats. The growth mindset cat knows that resting is part of the creative process.

But falling asleep from boredom is not resting. Here's a great story about that kind of sleep: The Sleeper.

Event on Campus. From 10:00AM-11:30AM this morning there will be a  Meet and Greet with Dr. Surratt  in the Student Affairs Conference Room in the Union (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

April 4: Maya Angelou. Today marks the birthday of the poet and writer, Maya Angelou, in 1928. You can read about her remarkable life and career at Wikipedia, and you can enjoy her poem Phenomenal Woman below:

Here's a video of the poem:
