Monday, September 23

Today is Monday of Week 6. (Yes, the semester really is one-third over: incredible!) Here is a link to the Week 6 assignments (and if you are finishing up Week 5 during the grace period this morning, here are the Week 5 assignments). I hope you will enjoy the new readings this week: it's the Middle East or India again in Myth-Folklore, while you will be starting the Mahabharata in Indian Epics!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. As always, the project stack is HUGE on Monday. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your assignment, you can check the stack to make sure it's there.

Start the week with extra credit. If you put off doing the extra credit until the end of the week, you might run out of time, but you can do Week 6 extra credit at the start of the week, or at any time during the week. So, if you feel like tinkering with your blog to add new features or playing with some meme generators, try the Tech Tips, or any of the other extra credit options.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Of course I noticed this werewolf go by! And it turns out this is Brooke's extra credit reading post with werewolf research for her Hogwarts Storybook. If there's a book or part of a book you want to read for extra credit, whether that's for your Storybook of just a topic you are interested in that is related to the class, please do that. You can never read too many stories!

Storybooks. And speaking of Hogwarts, here's a Storybook from Indian Epics with a Hogwarts theme: Hogwarts: The Loyalty of Brothers.

Twitter Stream. Liniers, the Argentinian cartoonist, is one of my favorites at Twitter, and he shared this latest cartoon in both Spanish and English:

Story of the Day. Today's "why" story is a folktale from Jamaica about the dung-beetle: Why Tumble-Bug Rolls in the Dung.

Indian Epics Today. The god for today is Vishnu; he is appearing here again because he will have an avatar in the Mahabharata as he did in the Ramayana. This time, Vishnu's avatar will be Krishna.

India Video. As you get ready for the Mahabharata in Indian Epics, here's a fun Epified video: Mahabharata meets Game of Thrones.

H.E.A.R.T.. And speaking of Game of Thrones, here are some thoughts about books and reading from Tyrion Lannister:

Myth-Folklore. Here's a cool map of Lake Monsters of America...  including the giant octopus that is supposed to live in Lake Thunderbird right in Oklahoma!

Mindset Cats. Advice from today's mindset cat: if you're facing monsters, don't let fear stop you.

Writing Video. And here's a video about my favorite punctuation mark: The Semicolon.

Event on Campus. There will be a free recital by Rodney Ackmann, bassoon, with En-chi Anna Ho, piano, and Dan Schwartz, oboe, at 8PM in Pitman Recital Hall (details). You can hear En-chi Anna Ho in this recording:

September 23: Equinox. Today is the autumnal equinox, so it is the first day of Fall, and now the days will be shorter than the nights; you can learn more about the astronomical details at Wikipedia. In the Wiccan "Wheel of the Year" (see image below), the arrival of Fall is celebrated as the holiday of Mabon, while in the southern hemisphere, it is the corresponding spring holiday of Ostara. You can see lots of tweets at the #Mabon Twitter stream today; that's where I found the Mabon graphic.
