Saturday, October 5

Today is Saturday of Week 7. Around the middle of the semester like this, school can feel kind of overwhelming... which makes the weekend even more welcome: enjoy!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. Many people are adding new stories to their projects this weekend, which means next week I will have a LOT of stories to comment on. If you want comments back sooner rather than later, turn in your project today if you can. I'll update the stack periodically over the weekend so you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Project Slideshows. I try to keep the project slideshows up-to-date with people's website homepages, but I might have missed something. So, if you notice that the slide for your project does not match your current homepage, just let me know. It's exciting to see the variety of projects and styles that everybody has created: every semester is totally different from past semesters thanks to all that creative energy!

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. So, this was cool: I learned something about color (specifically, the color called magenta) from Abby's post about her new hair color.

Twitter Stream. I mentioned the #Inktober challenge at Twitter this month. Maybe some of you who are artists might do some Inktober sketching this weekend. If you do, let me know and I will share your art here! These are the Inktober 2019 prompts:

Story of the Day. Today's origin story is another Cherokee legend: Origin of the Pleiades and the Pine.

Indian Epics Today. The epic character for today is another of the Pandavas: Bhima. As the son of the wind god Vayu, that makes him Hanuman's half-brother. Bhima and Hanuman meet in a famous scene in the Mahabharata, and even if you cannot follow the dialogue here, you can see what is happening; here's an English-language animation of the same scene.

Storybooks. And here's a Storybook from last year in Indian Epics: Nataraja: The Lord of the Cosmic Dance.

Proverbs. This proverb comes from Zanzibar: When two elephants struggle, it is the grass that suffers.

Writing. For those of you who are into fonts, here is a John Atkinson cartoon about Elefonts.

And Grant Snider has some elefonts too:

Mindset Cats. Meanwhile, the mindset cat is developing new skills:

Event in OKC. Akansha from the Myth-Folklore class shared this information with me about her Indian classical dance troupe: they are performing tonight in the Oklahoma City Philharmonic's concert at the Civic Center, together with the singer Bombay Jayashri, in a Suite from the Life of Pi. More information at the Philharmonic website. The photo is from Akansha's blog post:

October 5: World Teachers' Day. Today is World Teachers' Day. You can read more about this holiday honoring teachers at Wikipedia and at the UNESCO website.
