Sunday, October 6

Today is Sunday of Week 7, the last day of Week 7. Here's a link to Week 7, and here is a link to Week 8, which is a Review Week. I hope you will enjoy the change of pace with the Review Week assignments; you might want to do those today, especially if you are going to be out of town next week for OU-Texas.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Half-way done! The end of Week 7 marks the end of the first half of the semester (14 weeks total, plus Dead Week). You can check your class progress with this chart. On Monday afternoon I'm supposed to enter mid-term progress grades. To be passing the class at the end of Week 7, you should have around 150 points; if your goal is to get an A in the class, you should have around 200 points now.

Project Stack. I'll update the stack periodically as people turn in those assignments today, and you can always check the stack to make sure I received your email. Some of you will have a free pass for the project during Week 8; you can find out more about that here.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Last week I featured Marissa's use of a Google Map embedded in her Storybook about Hawaii, and today I wanted to feature her use of the image carousel on her Storybook homepage.

If you are working on a project with lots of image resources, you might also want to try creating a slideshow; just choose insert "image carousel" from the Sites menu.

Twitter Stream. I noticed this beautiful work of art for Navratri in the Amar Chitra Katha Twitter stream; the art is by Ketan Pal. For more about Navratri, see below.

Indian Epics Today. Today's epic character is ARJUNA, the great archer of the Mahabharata. You can learn more about Arjuna here, and also in this Epified video:

Story of the Day. The "why" story for today is a Cherokee legend about a trickster turtle: Why Turtle's Shell Is Cracked.

Storybooks. Here's an exciting Storybook from last year: Discovering Dragons. It's a Wix site:

Myth-Folklore Video. And here's a Crash Course video on Serpents and Dragons.

Proverbs. This is a Latin proverb, a modern Latin proverb, about dragons (from J.K. Rowling): Never tickle a sleeping dragon.
Draco dormiens numquam titillandus.

And a quote from Brian Andreas: Anyone can slay a dragon, he told me, but try waking up every morning and loving the world all over again.

Mindset Cats. And this mindset cat is learning in her own way.

HEART Video. And here's some advice about getting a good night's sleep this weekend: What would happen if you didn’t sleep?

Event near Campus. Alby from Myth-Folklore is part of a jazz quintet that will be performing tonight at Othello's, 7PM-9PM: The D.A.V.E. Quintet (details). Alby says: "We really love it when people come out to listen, and it's a fun space with a stage and all, so it does feel like a bit of a night on the town 🙂."

October 6: Navratri. The Navratri festival continues, and today, the eighth of the nine days, honors Mahagauri, a manifestation of the goddess Durga embodying intelligence and peace. You can follow the festivities at Twitter, which is where I found this image of the goddess:
