Wednesday, November 6

Today is Wednesday of Week 12. Here is a link to Week 12 (plus a link to Week 13 for those of you who are working ahead).

Class Procedures and Reminders

Extra Credit. While you are doing the reading, you might see something you are curious about: if so, do a Wikipedia Trail! Find out more in the extra credit section.

Project Stack. If you turned in something before noon on Sunday, you should have comments back from me, and you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment. I'll keep working on the Sunday afternoon items today!

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog/Project Stream. I shared something about Singular They in yesterday's announcements, so I wanted to share Kaitlyn's Storybook project, which has some great use of singular they, like in this new story: Robin and Marian.

You may find that singular they sounds unusual, but think about it: you are used to using you as a singular pronoun, even though it's plural. "You are" sounds normal (are! plural!), and "thou" is the pronoun that sounds weird now. Language: it's always changing. :-)

Twitter Stream. One of my favorite Twitter accounts is Don't Panik who shares beautiful art from India, like this early 19th-century painting of Krishna milking a cow:

Myth-Folklore. From the world of Mythology and Folklore, here's a map of Monsters in America.

Indian Epics Today. The character of the day is URMILA, Lakshmana's wife. She is most famous for the story of "Umila Nidra," the Sleep of Urmila; more about Urmila here.

Story of the Day. And here's a story about a big cat: Why the Tiger is Striped. Yes, once again, it's Brer Rabbit's fault. :-)

H.E.A.R.T.. Books are great, and so are libraries, as Hermione understood: When in doubt, go to the library!

Writing Video. Here's another Mike Rugnetta video (from his days at PBS before Crash Course): Are LOLCats and Internet Memes Art? Of course you know I would answer: yes!

Mindset Video. And here's a useful video about the science of learning from Barbara Oakley: How to Turn Information into Intelligence.

Event on Campus. Ryeli (in Indian Epics) is assistant director for Me Too Monologues, and the show debuts at Meacham tonight at 7PM, with another performance again tomorrow night  (details).

November 6: Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment. Today is a United Nations observance of the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, and you can find out more at the United Nations websiteThough mankind has always counted its war casualties in terms of dead and wounded soldiers and civilians, destroyed cities and livelihoods, the environment has often remained the unpublicized victim of war.Water wells have been polluted, crops torched, forests cut down, soils poisoned, and animals killed to gain military advantage.

Check out the Twitter stream for information and fun stuff during the day, or click here for past announcements.
