Saturday, October 24

Today is Saturday of Week 9. I hope you are enjoying the weekend!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. I'll update the stack periodically this weekend, and you'll be able to check there to make sure I received your assignment. On Monday I'll start working on the remaining projects from last week, and then the projects from this weekend.

Extra Credit. Another person has finished the class (congratulations, Libby!), and a great way to work ahead and finish early is to do extra credit each week. For example, if you're doing a Storybook, Wikipedia Trails are a way you can do research. Another fun one is to review the past week's announcements; it's a great way to catch up and also get ready for the week to come.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog stream. People keep writing new microfiction experiments, which is exciting to see! Kylie did these stories in the Halloween spirit: Two Tiny Ghost Stories.

Twitter stream. There's always something going on at Google Art Project, like this: The Future is Unwritten: Artists for Tomorrow.

More about the festival of the Goddess in India, this time via National Geographic: Celebrating the Devi in Disguise in Tamil Nadu.

Plus something from Scroll: Dark is Divine.

And if you want to decorate a pumpkin, the Smithsonian wants to help! Page Frights for pumpkin carving:

Some of them are mythological!

Storybook. And here's some Shakespearean horror from Myth-Folklore last year: Making a Murderer: Lady Macbeth.

100-Word Stories. Plus a question about bringing killers to justice: The Justice of the Gods. (The god in the story is the Greek god Hermes.)

Meanwhile, some life-advice via Chitra Divakaruni:

Books meet social media: the New York Public Library has designed some Instagram-delivered novels for those of you who use Instagram. Read NYPL Insta Novels.

And speaking of books, here's a comic about books from Grant Snider (larger view):

And some music for the weekend from Maati Baani: Rang Rangiya.

October 24: Gene Roddenberry. Today marks the death in 1991 of Gene Roddenberry, the visionary creator of Star Trek; he was born in 1921. You can read more about Roddenberry's life and accomplishments in Wikipedia, and also in this wonderful cartoon: It's Going to be Okay. Here is Roddenberry watching the Space Shuttle Enterprise in 1976 (image source).

And a video about what Star Trek meant to astronaut Ron McNair:
