Sunday, November 1

Today is Sunday of Week 10. The OGE outage map for Norman still looks really grim, so I'm guessing some people in class (even a lot of people...?) are still without power. As I explained last week, you've all got full credit for Week 10, so don't worry about that. Hopefully everybody's power will be back for Week 11. If you do want to do some Week 10 work today, that's great (details below), or you can jump right into Week 11.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Week 10 for extra credit. Everybody got full credit already for Week 10 (details here), but you can also do the Week 10 assignments and those points will be extra credit; every assignment you complete gets you closer to finishing up the class. So, the Week 10 Project, Feedback, and Blog Comment options are all available in Canvas, plus the Story/Lab assignment (I extended that because of the power outage), along with all the usual extra credit. So, if you do have time and wifi, you can do any/all of those Week 10 assignments. And if you have questions about any of that, let me know!

Project Stack. So, if you decide to turn in a project today, that's wonderful! I'll update the stack periodically today so that you can check the stack to make sure I received your project, and on Monday I'll start replying to the assignments in order.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog stream. If you're still in the mood for some Halloween-themed stories, here's one from Natalie M.'s blog:  How to be Dead 101.

Twitter stream. Plus something from Twitter in the Halloween spirit: silent movie scares:

I thought this was hilarious: Spiderman 2020.

And a lovely video from India, raising funds to fight COVID there:

And something else exciting from India: Samhita Arni (author of books inspired by the Ramayana and Mahabharata) has won an award for this beautiful novel based on a Tamil classic: The Prince.

Storybook. Plus a Storybook from last year set in India: The Konark Dialogue.

100-Word Stories. And this is a story set in Baghdad and Cairo: The Man of Baghdad's Treasure.

Here's a fabulous new comic from Grant Snider for COVID times: Confinement. It even has capybaras!

As for typos, I'm guilty as charged: typing humor.

And if you're curious about just how English got to be the way it is, here's a video: How did English evolve?

All Saints Day - All Souls Eve. October 31 was the "Eve of All Hallows," i.e. the Eve of All Saints, which is celebrated today, November 1. All Saints celebrates those who have died and attained blessedness in heaven, while All Souls on November 2 celebrates those who have died but who have not yet achieved heaven. In many countries, people visit graveyards on November 1, bringing flowers to the graves of the dead. For example, in Poland, today is Wszystkich Świętych, which means "All Saints" (image source):

And today is also the end of Daylight Saving Time... enjoy your extra hour! Here's a fun video about this very weird ritual: Daylight Saving
