Sunday, November 15

Today is Sunday of Week 12. Here is a link to Week 12, and you can find all the weeks on the class calendar. I would really urge people to finish up before Thanksgiving if you can; more information about that below.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. I'll update the stack periodically today so that you can check the stack to make sure I received your project. Everybody's on their own schedule with the project, so if you are not sure what you have due or if you need me to send you comments from last week again, just let me know!

Finishing in Week 13. (repeat announcement) At the beginning of the semester, I was worried about what might happen at the end of the semester, and the COVID numbers in Oklahoma are definitely not looking good right now. So, I set up an option so that people could finish the class early in Week 13: if by the end of Week 13 you have reached 380 points, that's an A; 335 points is a B, and 300 points is a C. It's just something optional; there will be a regular Week 14 and Week 15 after Thanksgiving if you are not done by the end of Week 13. For more information about how all that works, see the Progress Chart page here, and if you have any questions about that, let me know.

Self-advocacy advice. On Friday, the OU Provost made it official: there will not be a P/NP option this semester. That's really disappointing news, but this thread from another OU instructor can help if the pandemic and/or ice storm has made this semester a hard one: OU Students Support. There is lots of specific, useful advice in the thread about working with your instructors if you need to ask for help.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog stream. People keep adding such cute stuff to the Padlet; I don't know who added this, but thank you to whoever did! (You can do the check-in-and-connect thing for Week 12 if you have something to add.)

Twitter stream. There was so much cool stuff at Twitter yesterday because of Diwali, like this tweet about Warli paintings:

Here's a beautiful video of a Maori boy doing the Haka dance:

I like the idea of the sun snoozing during the short days of the year:

100-Word Stories. Here's an Aesop's fable about The Frogs and the Sun.

Some of you may be listening to Child Ballads about Robin Hood in Myth-Folklore, and here's the old folk ballad Tam Lyn in a remarkable new version by Benjamin Zephaniah (lyrics here):

For comparison, here's a more traditional version of that ballad (lyrics here):

Storybook. And speaking of Robin Hood, here's a fun Storybook from last year: Robin Hood: Raiders of the Lost Bow.

November 15: Johannes Secundus. Today is the birthday of the Latin poet Johannes (or Janus) Secundus. He was born in 1511 — not in ancient Roman times, but in Renaissance Europe. He is most famous for a series of poems he called Liber Basiorum in Latin, or The Book of Kisses. To learn more about Secundus and his all-too-short life (he died when he was just 24 years old), see Wikipedia article, and here is a portrait:
