Tuesday, March 6

Today is Tuesday of Week 8, and I've re-arranged the Modules area in Canvas so the new week is on top. It's Review Week, and here is a link to the Review Week assignments.

Update: One person wrote and said she had trouble with the class wiki so, just in case, here is a link to the Tues-Wed-Thurs Week 8 assignments: Review Week Assignments (blog post).

Class Procedures and Reminders

Success Tip: Work ahead and finish early. Yesterday I talked about working ahead to help manage your time during the week, and today I wanted to remind everybody that you can work ahead and finish this class early. A few students will probably be finishing this week, so I put up the "FINISHED!" form in Canvas that you can fill out to let me know you are done.

Project Stack. The stack is huge, and yesterday I got through most of the Friday assignments; I'll finish the Friday assignments today and move on to the Saturday part of the stack. While you are waiting on comments back from me, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email. If you are eligible for the Week 8 free pass, you can turn that in any time; you don't need to wait until you get comments back from me about Week 7.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. I like learning about new online tools from people's tech tips, and Joe used a collage maker here called befunky.com: Joe's Collage. You can try befunky.com or fotor.com (that's the one I use), or any other tool you want to create your own collage.

Myth Item. There are a lot of Medusa cartoons out there, and this one by Scott Hilburn is one of my favorites: Midas and Medusa.

India Video: I love this public service announcement from India: What Gods Wear Before They Ride. Maybe this could inspire you to write your own public service announcement based on a myth or legend.

Myth Book Online: Today's free book is Rudyard Kipling's Just-So Stories. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents.

Proverb of the Day: Today's proverb is from South Africa: Dawn does not come twice to wake us. Find out more at the Proverb Laboratory.

Writing: There's a lot of truth in this cartoon: A Brief History of Writing Technology.

H.E.A.R.T.: Here's some advice for the Review Week: Practice the Pause.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready to play the game of life: The hand you're dealt is just the starting point. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Video: Here's a fun video about my favorite writing technology: the alphabet! 10 Letters We Dropped From The Alphabet.

Event on Campus: Come to Bizzell Library at 7PM for "Ask a Native," a panel on Native American cultural questions, including etiquette for the upcoming stomp dance, powwow, and spring celebration (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

March 6: Andrzej Wajda. Today marks the birthday of one of the world's great film directors: Andrzej Wajda, who was born in 1926 — and, as I was sad to learn, he died in 2016; here is his obituary in the Guardian newspaper. He made many amazing films, including a film about the massacre at Katyń during World War II in which his own father was killed; you can read more about that film here: Katyń: History, Lies, Fiction and Myth.
