Wednesday, December 9

Today is Wednesday of WEEK 15. Wednesday morning, until noon, is the grace period if you did not finish the Tuesday assignment, and I would urge you to finish up the assignments for the rest of the week today too if you can!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. You can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment. On Tuesday, I finished up all the stories that people turned in this week; today I hope to completely finish the stack.

Week 15 schedule. (repeat announcement) The schedule for Week 15 is compressed because of finals. Instead of lasting over the weekend, Week 15 will end at NOON this FRIDAY, December 11. All the Week 15 assignments are available at this time, so there is no need to wait. Please finish up the class now if you can instead of waiting until Friday.

Finishing the class.  (repeat announcement) When you reach the points you need for your final grade — 410 points for an A, 360 points for a B, 320 points for a C — let me know, and I'll record the letter grade for you there in the Desire2Learn Gradebook!

The following items are for fun and exploration:

The Tunnel. If you are thinking about the "light at the end of the tunnel" as the semester comes to an end, I thought you might enjoy this mind-bending graphic:

Words to Watch: Today's words to watch out for are AISLE and ISLE. For details, see this blog post.

Featured Storybook: How I Met Your Mother. In this Storybook you will meet three fathers — Shantanu, Nala, and Satyavan — and each of them is trying to explain to his sons just how they met the woman who became the boys' mother. As you can imagine, these stories are gonna be legend — ... wait for it... legend-DAIRY!

Free Book Online: A Treasury of Eskimo Tales by Clara Kern Bayliss . This blog post provides additional information about the stories in this book, which include a Raven tale: Raven Makes an Ocean Voyage.

India Featured Book: Shri Krishna of Dwarka by C. A Kincaid. This blog post provides additional information about this free book online for Indian Epics; I'm writing up some reading guides for it right now to make it more useful to students next semester!

Words of Wisdom: Today's proverb poster is Waste not, want not (an English proverb). Details at the Proverb Lab. This is one of my favorite proverbs! Note the old-fashioned use of "want" to mean "lack," i.e. if you don't waste things, you will not lack things; you will have everything you need!

Today's Video: Lord of the Rings Mythology. A crash course in just four minutes!

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is Mrs. Bean, a cat who belongs to a friend of mine; she knows that Growth mindset means... you chase your dreams. Details at the blog.

Event on Campus: The Union Treat Cart will be on the move in the Union starting at 7PM; just tweet your location in the Union to @UPBOU (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

Note: You can page back through the older blog posts to see any announcements you might have missed, and you can check out the Twitter stream for information and fun stuff during the day.
