Saturday, March 5

Today is Saturday of Week 7. I hope you are having a nice weekend!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. I read and replied to all the assignments turned in by Thursday noon, and I'll be updating the stack periodically this weekend. You can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment.

Week 8 Assignments. (repeat announcement) For those of you who have been working ahead, those Week 8 assignments are now available! There is no new reading in Week 8, and instead there are just some review activities. You can see how that works in the Week 8 assignments list. I hope you will have fun with this change of pace for the middle of the semester!

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Aaron Sorkin. I will confess: I am an Aaron Sorkin fan: I don’t have to live in the real world — I'm a fiction writer.

Indian Words in English: Today's word from India in English is CHINTZ, from Hindi chint, which is in turn from Sanskrit chitra, meaning "distinctively marked, many-colored." And yes, this is also where the word "chintzy" comes from. For details, see this blog post.

Featured Storybook: Chasing a Rabbit Trail. An adventurous young American rabbit decides to visit rabbit relatives around the world, listening to their stories and learning from each one of them along the way.

Free Book Online: Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. This blog post provides additional information about the contents of the book; it's also available as a free audiobook!

India Featured Book: Draupadi: Fire-Born Princess by Saraswati Nagpal. This blog post provides additional information about this reading option for Indian Epics which is available on Reserve in Bizzell Library.

Words of Wisdom: Today's proverb poster is If you climb up a tree, you must climb down the same tree (a proverb from Sierra Leone). Details at the Proverb Lab. Call it the karma of tree climbing!

Today's Video: Sarve shaam. This is another one of the chants from Ravi Shankar's "Chants of India." You can see here the lyrics for this and other Shantih mantras.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat confronts her fears: Courage means you don't let fear stop you. Details at the blog.

Event on Campus: Come see a Festival of Silent Film Comedy with live organ accompaniment starting at 10:30AM in Catlett's Sharp Concert Hall (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

Note: You can page back through the older blog posts to see any announcements you might have missed, and you can check out the Twitter stream for information and fun stuff during the day.
