HAPPY FRIDAY! You have reached the end of Week 7... and that means the semester is about half over! Here is a link to the class calendar; after you finish this week's assignments, you can start in on Week 8 if you want — it's a review week, so no new reading!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. Today I should be able to reply to all the assignments that were turned in before Thursday, and I'll get to as many of the Thursday assignments as I can. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. Doing a Growth Mindset Challenge is a great way to reflect on the past week and set goals for the week ahead. Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, check out this great item from the OU Daily: Commonly Grounded — it's wonderful work from Emma, who is in the Myth-Folklore class.

Words from Mythology. Today's word is CHIMERA, a fire-breathing hybrid of lion, goat, and snake body parts. In English, the word has come to mean something so weird or fantastical that it cannot possibly exist.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Indian Epics class: Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Missing River. Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion Dr. Watson have come to India for some rest and relaxation, but when they find a murdered woman in their rented room, they have no choice but to pursue the mystery.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Gods and Heroes of Old Japan by Violet M. Pasteur. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. The illustrations are by Ada Galton.

Story of the Day. Today's story is a folktale from India: Death and the Four Doors. A young woman marries a man who will die young, but she uses her wits to try to save his life.

Video: The video for today is Manish Vyas on the Santoor. Manish Vyas is one of my favorite Indian musicians; find out more at his YouTube Channel.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat worked hard all week: Study hard, and then take a break. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event NEAR Campus: Andreea Marculescu will be giving a talk on The Wicked Witch of the West at 6:15 PM at the Norman Public Library West location (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

October 6: William Tyndale. On this day in the year 1536, the religious scholar William Tyndale was executed. His crime was translating the Bible into English. He was strangled in a public execution, and his body was then burnt at the stake. His last words were reportedly, "Lord! Open the King of England's eyes!" (the King of England at the time was the notorious Henry VIII). You can read about Willian Tyndale's remarkable life and scholarly career in this Wikipedia article. The image below shows Tyndale at the stake:
