Thursday, October 5

Today is Thursday of WEEK 7. If you have not done your story yet for this week, that means today is Storytelling Day. Have fun, and maybe try something new! Here is a link to all of this week's assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

My schedule today. I'll be in and out today, so perhaps not as quick to respond to emails, but I'll be sure to get back to you by the end of the day.

Storytelling Style: Ballad. If you're looking for something new to try, how about writing a ballad! Ballads are stories in songs, and there have been story ballads sung all around the world probably since people first started to sing. Find out more here: Writing a Ballad. You can write words to go with a tune you already know, and maybe even find the music at YouTube so people can sing along with the words you have written.

Project Stack. I've replied to the assignments turned in by 8PM on Sunday, and I'll keep working on the Sunday assignments today. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. Jessica completed a really fun Tech Tip yesterday that she shared in her blog: she made an image collage. Maybe you will want to make an image collage to use for your project! Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, here is a recreation of the Elgin Marbles... a reminder that the Greeks painted their statues; it was not all just white marble.

Proverb. Here is a fun Latin proverb to ponder: No chick ever came from a fried egg. And the Latin rhymes: Ex frixis pullus ovis numquam venit ullus.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Indian Epics class: Project Runway: Indian Epics Edition. This Storybook features both beautiful clothes and beautiful stories about Ulupi the Asura Princess, Noor Jahan the Mughal Queen, and Ganges the River Goddess. Which fashion designer do you think won this season's contest?

Free Book Online: Today's free book is The King of the Snakes and other Folklore Stories from Uganda by Rosetta Baskerville. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. You can read more about the east African country of Uganda at Wikipedia.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from the Buddhist jataka tales: The Foolhardy Wolf. A wolf becomes the lion's servant, and this inspires him with dangerous ambitions.

Video: For a ballad (see above) I wanted to share one of my favorites: Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant Massacree. Find out more at Wikipedia and yes, Arlo Guthrie is Woody Guthrie's son. The lyrics are at Genius.com.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is sending creative wishes for your storytelling today: Creativity gives you a sense of pride. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: Drop by Bizzell Library's Lower Level to see this traveling exhibit: A is for Arab: Stereotypes in U.S. Popular Culture (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

October 5: Valmiki Jayanti. Today is Valmiki Jayanti, the birthday of Valmiki, the poet who composed the Sanskrit Ramayana. You can find out more about the holiday in this Times of India article: History and Significance of Valmiki Jayanti, and you can find out more about Valmiki at Wikipedia. Here's a video from Epified ... and watch the Twitter hashtag today for more: #ValmikiJayanti.
