Monday, October 9

Today is Monday. Week 7 is now over... and Week 8 has begun. It's a review week this week, so instead of reading/storytelling, the blog posts are reflection and planning posts, looking back and forward. You can find the week's assignments at the Class Calendar.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. As usual, the stack is HUGE on Monday. I'll be working on the assignments that were left in the stack on Friday first. Meanwhile, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. There is no required reading this week... but there is always extra-credit reading! So if you are feeling story-deprived, you can pick something to read for extra credit. Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, here is something of special interest for Indian Epics: Characters who appear in both Mahabharata and Ramayana. It's pretty cool that articles about the epics are popular reading in India today!

And for those of you in Myth-Folklore, here is a beautiful vase and a legend about how Paris was disguised as Menelaus when he took Helen from Sparta to Troy.

Spelling. Because you can never have too much English spelling humor: werewolf.
Storybook Archive. This project is from the Indian Epics class: Temple of Doom. Instead of Indiana Jones, meet Dr. Arwen Fairchild, archaeologist — although she does have some help from a gallant "Yank" with a strong resemblance to Indiana. As the mystery deepens, it turns out that Dr. Arwen Fairchild herself may be the key... because there is more to the story of Shiva's bow than you ever imagined!

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Japanese Demon Lore: Oni, From Ancient Times to the Present by Noriko T. Reider. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. This book was published very recently (2010), and thanks to the author's generosity, you can read it for free at Hathi Trust; instead of the usual copyright, the book has a Creative Commons license.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from the Buddhist Jatakas: The Crocodile and the Monkey. The crocodile thinks he can trick the monkey, but it turns out the monkey is the greater trickster of the two.

Video: The video for today is for the fans of Ganesha: Jai Uttal's Ganesha Sharanam. Find out more at Jai Uttal's website.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is setting goals for the second half of the semester: you won't always reach your goal, but it's something to aim at. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: Native artist Wendy Ponca will be giving a talk at 3PM in 246 Copeland as part of the Oklahoma Contemporary Native American Artist lecture series (details).

October 9: Indigenous People's Day. You can find out more about this holiday at Wikipedia, and events begin at 10AM on the South Oval for OU’s third Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration (details). Here is a picture from last year's celebrations:
