Sunday, October 8

Today is Sunday of Week 7. You can finish up the Week 7 assignments today, and you might want to start on Week 8 today too; it's a review week, so no new reading. You can find all the assignments for this week and next week at the Class Calendar.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. I'll update the stack periodically today, and the sooner you can turn in your assignment, the sooner you will get comments back from me next week. Meanwhile, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. Today is a great day to do the Last Words and/or the Review extra credit options. Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

Canvas Gradebook. Some of you had written to me about the inaccurate "missing" labels in the Canvas Gradebook, which were showing up everywhere, even for extra credit options and even for completed assignments. Because of the strange bugs with that feature, Canvas finally rolled it back this weekend, so you should not be seeing those red labels in the Gradebook anymore. Personally, I hope they don't bring it back at all. Life is better without red ink IMO. :-)

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, here is The Chinese Cinderella.

Games in India. Those of you in Indian Epics know about the dice game of the Mahabharata, and India has a long history of games. Find out more at Ancient India: The Birthplace of Modern Game Design.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: Lost in the Woods: A Search Party in Peril. A young woman has gone missing in the woods, and her friends are determined to find out what has happened to her. They spread out into four separate search parties, facing the darkness with only flashlights — and stories — to help them find their way.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is The Storybook of the Shah; or, Legends of Old Persia by Ella C. Sykes. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. The illustrations are by Claude Cooper.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from Aesop's fables: The Wolf and the Kid. The young goat uses his quick wits to make his escape!

Video: The video for today is The Mythic Potential of Comic Book Films. The video is a few years old, and the comic book film universe is even more densely networked than it was at that time!

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is an online learner: I learn new things constantly. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: Today is the opening of the Native and Indigenous Literary Festival: Returning the Gift in the OCCE Forum building (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

October 8: Karva Chauth. Today is the northern Indian festival of Karva Chauth. You can find out more at Wikipedia, and this holiday was also the subject of an Indian Epics Storybook in a previous class: Lifelong Devotion: Tales of Love at Karva Chauth.

If you follow the Twitter today for Karva Chauth, you will see some extraordinary mehndi designs, like these:
