Saturday, October 28

Today is Saturday of Week 10. I hope you are enjoying the Homecoming Weekend!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. On Friday, I finished replying to all the Week 9 assignments in the stack, and on Monday, I'll get back to those of you who turned in your Week 10 (or later) assignments on or before Friday. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can always check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. The weekend is a great time to explore the Growth Mindset options; here are some Growth Mindset posts to inspire you. Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

Finishing the Class. (repeat announcement) I would urge you to make a plan now for finishing the class based on the final four weeks (plus Dead Week) that come after this week. You can use this Progress Chart to see how you are doing, and you can ponder which types of assignments you enjoy most/least as you decide how you will finish up the semester.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, here is an illustration from Thesaurus Anatomicus (1701) shared by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. There's going to be lots of Halloween stuff at Twitter in the days to come!

Words from Mythology. Today's word is MORPHINE from the Greek god, Morpheus.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: Young Jamie and the Tasks of Titania. The children of the village are disappearing, and brave Jamie decides that he will rescue them, even if it means entering into a terrifying bargain with Titania, queen of the faeries.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Avataras by Annie Besant. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. You can find out more about the remarkable author of this book here: Annie Besant.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from Aesop's fables: The Man and the Idol. This is a paradoxical fable about religious devotion: the idol does not perform as expected!

Video: The video for today is Tiffany Shlain's The Science of Character. Shlain singles out seven character strengths that are really important in education: curiosity, perseverance, gratitude, optimism, social intelligence, and enthusiasm (enthusiasm is one of my personal favorites).

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready to go on an educational journey: I drive my own learning. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: Happy Homecoming! Check out the fun paintings on Campus Corner in this OU Daily Photo Gallery. Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

October 28: Erasmus. Today marks the birthday in the year 1466 of Desiderius Erasmus, one of the greatest scholars of the Renaissance and a hero of mine. You can read about Erasmus's  life and career in this Wikipedia article, and below is a famous portrait of Erasmus by Hans Holbein the Younger. Along the edge of the book facing the viewer the letters read "The Labors of Heracles" in Greek (ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΟΙ ΠΟΝΟΙ = HERAKLEIOI PONOI), alluding to the mighty feats which Erasmus accomplished in his life as a scholar, labors worthy of Hercules.
