Monday, November 27

Today is Monday. Week 13 is now over... and Week 14 has begun, the last full week of class! The new week's topic in the Myth-Folklore class is European stories and legends, and in Indian Epics you are choosing your own reading. You can find the week's assignments at the Class Calendar.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Evaluations. The course evaluations are available now at eval.ou.edu. The online course program is under close scrutiny (it still counts as something "new" at the university), so your comments are very important. Also, most of the good things about this class started as suggestions from past students. So, I really value your feedback... and you might even win an iPad as part of the eval.ou.edu giveaway!

Project Stack. Especially with all the assignments turned in over the break, the stack is huge! I'll be reading the assignments in the order they were turned in, starting with the assignments from before Thanksgiving. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. It's never too late to learn some new tech tricks! Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, here is a lovely video Shri Keshav; click the link to see the Twitter video.

Proverb. This is one of my favorite proverbs: Different strokes for different folks.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Indian Epics class: The Goddess's Safe Haven. Durga is your hostess at this haven, a safe place for women to explore their lives and find inspiration for their next incarnation. Join one of the support groups and hear the stories that Draupadi, Amba, and Ahalya choose to share.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Croatian Tales of Long Ago by Ivana Berlić-Maz̆uranić. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. The illustrations are by Vladimir Kirin, and you can find out more about this book at the Public Domain Review.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from Aesop's fables: The Mouse's Wedding. Remember that fable about the mouse who rescued the lion? This is a story about what happened next... and things do not turn out well for the mouse.

Video: The video for today is Shankar Tucker's Guru Brahma, with vocals by Mahesh Vinayakram. Find out more about the Guru Stotram.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready to keep on learning: What can I learn next? You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: Come see the Robert Taylor exhibit at the Fred Jones Museum (details); this is his painting entitled When the Plains Were His.

November 27: Saint Josaphat's Day. Today marks the feast day of a fascinating Catholic saint: Saint Josaphat. Saint Josaphat's story was made famous in the medieval tale of "Barlaam and Josaphat," which is an adaptation of the story of Siddhartha Gautama, better known as the Buddha. You can read more about Josaphat in this Wikipedia article; the image below is a depiction of Saint Josaphat from a medieval Greek manuscript:
