Thursday, October 18

Today is Thursday of Week 9. Here is a link to the Week 9 assignments. For many of you, today is storytelling day, and I hope you have fun with that!

Class Procedures and Reminders

My schedule. I'll be away from my desk most of today, so if you send me an email, be patient waiting on a reply; I'll get back to you at some point today, just not as fast as usual.

Project Stack. There aren't too many items left in the stack, and I'll get through those remaining items by the end of the week. You can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Project Stream. Yesterday, I shared a screenshot of Jarad's Portfolio layout, and Nathaniel has experimented with something similar, as you can see in his SpongeBob story: Squidward's Art. As you visit people's blogs and websites, you can always be on the lookout for design features you want to borrow and adapt!

Featured Storybook. If you want to learn about Gilgamesh, you can do that here: The Heroic Tyrant-King. The ancient epic of Gilgamesh survives only in fragments, but this Storybook fills in the gaps to conjure up both Gilgamesh and Enkidu in great psychological depth.

Myth Video. And here is someone performing the Sumerian Gilgamesh in a musical re-creation of the ancient story.

India Video. Here's another Epified video, this time about the heavens: Lokas - Seven Worlds Above Us.

India Item. This is a proverb from the ancient Sanskrit Hitopadesha: For one whose foot is enclosed in a shoe, the whole surface of the earth is covered with leather.

Writing. Maybe you can borrow some characters for your story this week from this Tom Gauld cartoon: Characters for an Epic Tale.

And some advice from Brene Brown for both writing and for life: don't worry about what people think.

And here's a lovely Brene Brown video about Empathy.

Growth Mindset Cats. There is always room to grow because your abilities are NOT carved in stone.

Event on Campus. There will be a performance of Cherokee Music Through the Ages featuring Cory Still and the Girty Family at 8PM in Sharp Concert Hall (details). Here's a video: The Girty Family: Singing Cherokee Heritage.

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

October 18: Luca Giordano. Today marks the birthday of the painter Luca Giordano in 1634. He painted many mythological subjects, including this painting of Perseus using the head of Medusa as a weapon! You can zoom in on painting details here: National Gallery.
