Sunday, November 11

Today is Sunday of Week 12. Here is a link to the Week 12 assignments so you can complete any work from that week, plus a link to Week 13 for working ahead too!

Class Procedures and Reminders

"Finished!" form. When you get to your goal (410 for an A, 360 for a B, 320 for a C), that means you are done with the class. All you need to do is fill out the "Finished!" form that you will find in Canvas in the sidebar menu, next to the Gradebook link. Congratulations to the people who have already completed the class!

Project Stack. I'll update the stack periodically so that you can check the stack to make sure I received your email. Then on Monday I'll start replying to the assignments in the order that they were turned in. The sooner you turn that in, the sooner you will get comments back.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Some of you in Myth-Folklore know that I'm taking the class as a student this semester, and here's something from my blog: a story that has a Braum's in it! Mistress Rabbit's Wedding Day. Who can resist Braum's? :-)

Featured Storybook. I'm sure Ganesha would like Braum's! You can read about Ganesha's love for food in Ganesha Tales for Children. Ganesha's mother Parvati is the host of this special television show for children with special guests like Kartikeya and Ganesha himself.

As the semester winds down, I am repeating favorite items from earlier announcements; these items come from Weeks 3 and 4:

India Video. Here's a Crash Course video, this time about India: Indian Pantheons.

India Item. Here is a word from India that we use in English: CALICO, as in calico cat. English "calico" is from the name of the city of of "Calicut" on the Malabar coast of India in Kerala.

Myth Video. And from the Mediterranean world, here is another Crash Course video: Pantheons of the Ancient Mediterranean.

Myth Item. Here's a word from Greek mythology: TITANIC, from the huge Greek gods called Titans.

Writing. Typos: we all make them! Before You Hit Sned.

Some reading advice from Tyrion Lannister: Books are better.

Growth Mindset Cats. This cat has some writing advice: to write well, you must practice.

And here's a fun video from Shakira about practice and making mistakes: Try Everything.

Event on Campus. Today is the last day to see the musical Dogfight; there's a 3PM matinee performance in the Weitzenhoffer Theatre (OU Daily review).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

November 11: Armistice Day. Today is Armistice Day, "The Day of the Setting-Down-of-Arms," which marked the end of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I on November 11 in 1918. November 11 is also the birthday of Kurt Vonnegut. You can read about Vonnegut's life and career in this Wikipedia article, and here he reflects on what it was like to have November 11 for his birthday:

When I was a boy, all the people of all the nations which had fought in the First World War were silent during the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of Armistice Day, which was the eleventh day of the eleventh month. It was during that minute in nineteen hundred and eighteen, that millions upon millions of human beings stopped butchering one another. I have talked to old men who were on battlefields during that minute. They have told me in one way or another that the sudden silence was the Voice of God. So we still have among us some men who can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind.
