Class Procedures and Reminders

Storytelling. Week 13 is a storytelling week, which means that for many of you today is storytelling day... and for at least some of you this may be your last story for the semester: I hope you will feel inspired and have fun!

Project Stack. If you turned in your project before 10PM on Sunday, you should have comments back from me now, and I'll keep working on the Sunday assignments today. You can always check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. I saw this dancing goddess in Joni's reading notes post, and I recognized it right away: this is an animated gif created by Nina Paley for her new film, Sedermasochism (and those of you in Indian Epics might remember Nina Paley as the creator of Sita Sings the Blues). To see how Nina Paley used these gifts in the new film, see the video excerpt below.

Free Book Online. Today's free book is Ramayana: India's Immortal Tale of Adventure, Love and Wisdom by Krishna Dharma. If you want to read the Ramayana in a modern novelistic style, you can find it here, free to read online:

Free Audiobook. Today's free audiobook is Myths and Legends of All Nations by Logan Marshall, including the story of Oedipus and the Sphinx as you can see below, and for another depiction of the Sphinx, see the Moreau item below.

Featured Storybook. In the spirit of the goddess, here is a Storybook about Isis: The Egyptian Goddess Isis. The goddess Isis was a devoted wife and a devoted mother, and these stories are about the heroic efforts she made in order to preserve her family.

Video. As mentioned above, here is one of the sequences of Nina Paley's Sedermasochism: You Gotta Believe.

India Video. Here's a lovely Maati Baani video, a collaboration between musicians from India and from Pakistan: Rang Rangiya. Turn on CC for the closed captions in English.

Myth Video. This is a Crash Course video on a famous mythological topic, perfect for those of you watching Game of Thrones: Dragons and Serpents.

Myth Item. Here's a medieval dragon from a hilarious Buzzfeed list: Medieval Beasts That Cannot Even Handle It Right Now.

Writing. If you want to start writing, just... start writing.

Writing. Similar advice from Margaret Atwood for your writing this week; don't let perfection become your writer's block: If I waited for perfection, I would never write a word.

Growth Mindset Cats. This kitten is ready to keep trying when soemthing isn't working.

And here's a fun growth mindset animation from Sprouts at YouTube.

Event on Campus. The Department of English will be hosting a resume writing and job application workshop from 11AM-2PM in the Cate 2 Reading Room. All majors welcome... and there will be free pizza! (details)

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.
