Wednesday, April 17

Today is Wednesday of Week 13. Here is a link to the Week 13 assignments, plus Week 14 if you are working ahead and/or mixing-and-matching as you finish up the class — and yes, any combination of assignments you want to use to finish the class is good!

Class Procedures and Reminders

My schedule today. I'll be away from my desk for at least part of today, so I might not respond to emails as quickly as usual but I should be able to get caught up by the end of the day.

Project Stack. If you turned in an assignment before 3PM on Sunday, you should have comments back from me now, and I'll keep working on the Sunday assignments today. As always, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Aleshia added a graduation widget to her blog (it's a Tech Tip!).

Free Book Online. Today's free book is Folklore of the Holy Land: Moslem, Christian and Jewish by J. E. Hanauer. Some of you in Myth-Folklore may have read stories from this book earlier in the semester:

Free Audiobook. Today's free audiobook is Stories from the Arabian Nights by Laurence Housman with illustrations by Edmund Dulac.

Featured Storybook. This project from last semester is a great example of interactive storytelling: Dungeons and Decisions. Everybody is getting together for a game of Dungeons and Dragons, including you. Roll the dice and see what fate awaits you in the land of Inuit myth and legend.

Myth Video. This is another one from Crash Course: Mythical Horses.

India Video. Any Battlestar Galactica fans out there? (It's one of my favorite shows.) The opening number is based on the ancient Sanskrit Gayatri mantra.

Another India Video. This is a TED talk by my favorite mythologist, Devdutt Pattanaik: Not Quite Avatar. You can follow Devdutt at Twitter!

Myth Item. Here's a map of America's Mythical Lake Monsters including the giant octopus that is supposed to live in Lake Thunderbird right here in Oklahoma!

Writing. As you write, you need both kinds of thinking: logic and imagination. Learn more here: Divergent-Convergent-Lateral Thinking.

Writing. Prose has dialogue, and cartoons have... speech balloons.

Growth Mindset Cats. Curiosity is a force that cannot be denied: Curiosity breeds curiosity.

Yes, it's an ad for Android... but it's also an adorable video: Friends FureverBe together. Not the same.

Event on Campus. It's the Eggstravaganza at the Sam Noble Museum today, 4PM-7PM, with free admission. Enjoy spring crafts, face painting, an egg hunt and more! (details)

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

April 17: Benjamin Franklin. Today marks the anniversary of the death of Benjamin Franklin in the year 1790; he was born in 1706. You can find out more at Wikipedia. There is a wonderful bit of Latin verse composed in Franklin's honor by the French statesman Turgot: Eripuit caelo fulmen, sceptrumque tyrannis, "He ripped the lightning from the sky, and the sceptre from the tyrants;" details here:
