Thursday, October 26

Today is Thursday of Week 10. If you have not done your story yet for this week, that means today is Storytelling Day: let your creativity loose and have fun with that! Here is a link to all of this week's assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. I'm back at work which means I'll be replying to those project emails; today, I will try to finish all the projects turned in on Sunday. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. As you're working on your story post today, maybe you will try a Tech Tip to create a custom image or graphic to use, or maybe embed a video or audio recording. Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

Storytelling style: Gender-Flip. Each week I suggest a storytelling style you might try (previous suggestions: social media, rap, animals, sci-fi, ballads, OU/Norman), and this week I wanted to suggest a gender-flip. Changing the gender of the character(s) in a story is a powerful transformation. For example, take a look at Haley's Ramayana heroines in her Storybook: The Trials of the Four Warriors, and check out the dragon in Erika's Storybook: A Story of Blood and Fire. Plus, you might enjoy this item about gender-flipping in images: Classic Westerns with Women.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, here is a beautiful online resource: Digitized Manuscripts and Books at the Vatican.

Spelling. Here are two sound-alikes that the spellchecker will not catch: IDLE versus IDOL.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: A Changeling's Journey. A young girl suspects she is a changeling and embarks on a long journey to find out more about changeling legends . . . and more about herself.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is The Path on the Rainbow edited by George W. Cronyn. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. This book might be of interest as you explore Native American traditions in Myth-Folklore this week and next.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from Aesop's fables: Death and Cupid. This is a fable about the topsy-turvy problems that occur when Death and Cupid get their arrows mixed up.

Video: The video for today is Are Emoticons the Future of Language? You can follow the linguist featured here, Ben Zimmer, at Twitter!

Growth Mindset: Let today's growth mindset cat inspire your storytelling this week: Learn to look at things from different angles. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: This is your last chance to come to the Goddard flu clinic (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

October 24: Chhath Puja. Today is the Chhath Puja festival in honor of Surya, the sun god. You can read more about this festival at Wikipedia, and you can follow the Chhath stream at Twitter.
