SPRING SEMESTER 2009. The courses are ready to go! For those of you who want to get a head start, Week 1 and Week 2 are both available now. Please go to the website for the course(s) you are enrolled in in order to get started - just click on the link for Week 1: Orientation and you will see the first week's activities if you want to start now. Week 2 is also available!
IMPORTANT NOTE: IT Maintenance. On the third Sunday of every month, IT does maintenance on its servers. There will be a maintenance window this Sunday, January 18. This often causes service outages, which may affect email and other OU IT services. The maintenance window is in the morning, and the maintenance should be completed before noon on Sunday. For specific information and updates, see the IT Alerts page at alerts.ou.edu (this is also a good page to check if you are experiencing problems with Desire2Learn, email, or other IT services).
My weekend schedule. I'll be checking email regularly on Friday, but I do not always check email regularly over the weekend. So, if you send me an email on Saturday or Sunday, you might not get a reply until Monday. If you have an urgent question, I will do my best to get back to you over the weekend - so definitely feel free to send me emails over the weekend, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can about anything that urgently needs a reply.
Storybook stack. Each week, you will be turning in a Storybook assignment to me which I will read and return to you with my comments, and I will also record the points in the Gradebook for you. This is the one assignment each week where you have to wait on your points; all the others points in the Gradebook appear automatically as you complete your quizzes and Declarations. Depending on when you turn in the Storybook assignment each week, you may have to wait to get comments back, but you can check the contents of the Storybook Stack online to see if your assignment is there. (Occasionally email does get lost, and this allows you to check to make sure your email has arrived!)

Getting a head start. I would urge everybody to get a head start on the semester if possible. Classes begin officially on Tuesday, January 20, and you have your first assignments due on Tuesday - but you can actually get those assignments taken care of now, before the craziness of the semester really gets underway. If you have any questions as you get started, let me know: laura-gibbs@ou.edu.
The new year. Is anybody else having trouble getting used to the year being 2009...? (I wrote 2008 on something today and did not even notice my mistake!)

Class Announcements. The regular Monday-Friday class announcements will begin on Tuesday, January 20, when the semester officially begins. In the meantime, I will do some quickie announcements for those of you who are getting a head start - and that way, those of you who have signed up for the Class Announcements email list will know that your email subscription is working! :-)
My Wednesday schedule. I do most of my school work during regular business hours on Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday, while scheduling my out-of-office commitments on Wednesdays. That means I may be a bit more slow to respond to your emails on Wednesday than on the other days of the week - but if you send me an email during the day on Wednesday, I'll definitely get back to you by the end of the day.
Previous Announcements. For previous announcements, you can always check the Class Announcements blog, and you can also find the previous five days' worth of announcements on the homepage for this course in Desire2Learn.
If you have any questions at all as you get started, please let me know: laura-gibbs@ou.edu.

Desire2Learn Gradebook and Quizzes. Especially at the beginning of the semester, there may be some disconnects between the Desire2Learn Gradebook and your Quizzes, so let me know if you take a Quiz or do a Declaration but do not see the points showing up for you in the Gradebook. Also, if for some reason you do not see your "Total Points" displayed at the top of the Gradebook, let me know and I'll get that fixed for you. It's important for you to keep an eye on the Gradebook during the semester, and if you notice anything at all out of the ordinary, just let me know and we'll get it taken care of.
OU Email "Please Reply" message. You should have received an email sent from me to your OU email address. Please make sure you reply to that email so that I know you are able to receive your OU email. Because OU email got off to a bad start this weekend (the course email rosters were not working correctly), you may have received two copies of the email and/or copies of the email in which the links were working only for those of you who use Exchange email. My apologies for the confusion! You only need to reply once to the email I sent around, and if you are having trouble with any of the links in the email, you should have an email from me called "Useful Links" which will give you the links you need in a clean format untouched by Microsoft Exchange email. :-)
Ning Invitation email. You should be receiving an invitation to join the class Ning (where you will be blogging and interacting with other members of the class). If you have not received that invitation for some reason, please contact me to request another invitation. For information about what to do when you log on to the Ning, check this page about Setting Up Your Ning Account - and definitely pay attention to the part about your email settings. The invitation I sent may have gone to your OU dotted name address, but you are free to sign up at the Ning with whatever email address you prefer to use.
