Fall 2020: Ready to go if you are..

Welcome to the FALL SEMESTER, everybody! Classes begin officially on Monday, August 24 — and if you want a head start on the semester, the classes are up and running now. As last semester showed, the pandemic is going to make our lives a lot harder right now, and I hope the flexibility of this online class will help you to cope with that. Flexible time scheduling, and being able to start early, is a big plus for online courses, and even more so in the pandemic.

Getting Started. To begin, click this Orientation link where you will find the list of assignments for Week 1. You will start by designing your class schedule, and then you will create your blog. I hope you will have fun with all of that, and if you run into any problems or have questions, let me know. I'm very grateful when people start early because you can alert me to anything I might need to fix before the official start of the semester. :-)

Contact. You can contact me via email anytime (laura-gibbs@ou.edu), and you can also send me Canvas messages. If you write me Monday-Friday, I will get back to you that day — probably pretty quickly! I check email less often in the evenings and weekends, but especially at the beginning of the semester I try to check more often so that I can answer any questions that come up as you get started. When I'm not going to be at my desk for an extended period of time on a weekday, I'll update the announcements to let you know.

Please call me Laura! I will be on a first-name basis with all of you, and I hope you will feel comfortable just calling me Laura. In fact, we are going to be students together this semester, since in addition to being the instructor, I enroll myself in the courses and participate as a student too. :-)

Daily Announcements. Starting on the official first day of classes (August 24), I'll be updating these announcements every day. If you want to subscribe by email, use the "subscribe" box in the sidebar of this blog. Type in the email address you prefer and follow the instructions to confirm your subscription. Then, when the daily announcements begin, you'll receive them by email each morning.

CAS Orientation. You will probably be getting an email from the College of Arts and Sciences Online office about their online orientation, but you do NOT need to do that orientation for this class. Instead, you will be doing the Orientation Week that relates specifically to this class.

Majors in the class. While setting up the course rosters, I realized I could download a spreadsheet that shows the majors of students enrolled in both classes. I thought that was pretty cool! Here is a word cloud showing the majors from the spreadsheet:

Twitter. Although there won't be new announcements until the semester officially begins, there will be new Twitter items which you can see in the sidebar of the blog or at Twitter: @OnlineMythIndia. Twitter is a great place to connect with writers, storytellers, and musicians, along with museums and libraries; I find new things to share at Twitter every day, and I hope you will enjoy learning from Twitter as part of this class.

And to finish up these early announcements, here is a video I never get tired of — a Mister Rogers remix called Garden of Your Mind. I grew up watching Mister Rogers, and it's been very gratifying to see Mister Rogers' legacy honored in recent years like in the "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" documentary and in the recent Tom Hanks film. As you get started with this class, you will see that Mister Rogers' curiosity-driven approach to learning and sharing is a big part of how this class works.

Gearing up for Fall 2020

The course will open early
on Monday, August 17
for anyone who wants a head start.

Week 0 starts on August 17, and Week 1 (official start of the semester) is August 24. So, it's now pre-Week-0, and I'm working on getting the classes all set up and ready to go for the early start on August 17. I'm going to use this post to keep track of the main things I'm working on, and I'll add a new post when the course is actually ready to go!

Spring 2020 ready to go if you are!

Welcome to the SPRING SEMESTER, everybody! Classes begin officially on Monday, January 13 — and if you want a head start on the semester, the classes are up and running now.

Getting Started. To begin, click this Orientation link where you will find the list of assignments for Week 1. You will start by designing your class schedule, and then you will create your blog. Please call me Laura! I will be on a first-name basis with all of you, and I hope you will feel comfortable just calling me Laura. In fact, we are going to be students together this semester, since I'm a student in Indian Epics, doing all the same assignments as you are doing (I did that last semester for Myth-Folklore, and it was so much fun!).

Daily Announcements. Starting on the official first day of classes (January 13), I'll be updating these announcements every day.

While setting up the course rosters, I realized I could download a spreadsheet that shows the majors of students enrolled in these classes (one section of Myth, two sections of Indian Epics). I thought that was pretty cool! Here is a word cloud; you should be able to find your major there, and you can make word clouds of your own at WordArt.com. It's a very useful tool for visualizing words and word lists:

FALL 2019 ready to go if you are!

Welcome to the FALL SEMESTER, everybody! Classes begin officially on Monday, August 19 — and if you want a head start on the semester, the classes are up and running now.

Email. You can contact me via email anytime (laura-gibbs@ou.edu), and you can also send me Canvas messages. If you write me during the day, I will get back to you that day — probably pretty quickly! Teaching these online classes is my full-time job, so that means I'm easy to reach by email any weekday. When I'm not going to be at my desk for an extended period of time on a weekday, I'll update the announcements to let you know.

Please call me Laura! I will be on a first-name basis with all of you, and I hope you will feel comfortable just calling me Laura. In fact, we are going to be students together this semester, since I'm a student in Myth-Folklore this semester, doing all the same assignments as you are (I did that last semester for Indian Epics, and it was so much fun!).

If you want to subscribe by email, use the "subscribe" box in the sidebar of this blog. Type in the email address you prefer and follow the instructions to confirm your subscription. Then, when the daily announcements begin, you'll receive them by email each morning.

CAS Orientation. As you'll see, there is a week-long Orientation specifically for this class, so you do not need to complete the CAS Online Orientation. If you are taking other online classes in addition to this one, you should complete the CAS Orientation, but you do not need it for this class.

Majors in the class. While setting up the course rosters, I realized I could download a spreadsheet that shows the majors of students enrolled in the class. i thought that was pretty cool! Here is a word cloud; you should be able to find your major there: pre-med and pre-PA are the two biggest groups, and I think that's great: storytelling is a good skill for health professionals to have!

And to finish up these early announcements, here is a video I never get tired of — a Mister Rogers remix called Garden of Your Mind. I grew up watching Mister Rogers, and his show was a very important part of my childhood. As you get started with this class, you will see that Mister Rogers' curiosity-driven approach to learning and sharing is a big part of how this class works.

Fall semester is coming...

Yes, it's August, and that means Fall semester is coming. The official first day of classes is Monday, August 19 ... and if all goes well, I'll be opening the classes early for anyone who wants to get a head start.

Update: The Canvas classes are now open! There is still a lot I am working on, but I think it's safe to get started. I'll send around an email to the class on Friday to make the early start official, but feel free to begin now if you want: Orientation.

Meanwhile, to reflect on the way the years keep rolling around and around, here's a lovely Brian Eno video about times and days: Just Another Day.

Oh it's just another day
It's just another day on Earth

Oh it's just another day
Just another day
It's just another day on Earth

Oh it's just another day on Earth
It's just another day on Earth

One day, we will put it all behind
We'll say, that was just another time

Please call me Laura! I will be on a first-name basis with all of you, and I hope you will feel comfortable just calling me Laura. One of the things I like best is how in an online class, we can all be learning together and sharing the online space to do that. There's no front of the classroom in an online class! :-)

Daily Announcements. Starting on the official first day of classes (January 16), I'll be updating the announcements every day. Getting ready for Spring 2018

Greetings, everybody, and I hope you are having a wonderful winter break! I'm in the process of updating the Myth-Folklore and Indian Epics classes to be ready for the Spring 2018 semester. As always, my goal is to make them available one week early for anyone who wants to get a head start. So, if all goes well, I should have both classes ready to go on Tuesday, January 9, one week before classes officially start on Tuesday, January 16.

About the classes. You can find out more by taking a look at the course syllabuses, and you can also browse the class wiki. If you have questions not answered there, contact me anytime by email: laura-gibbs@ou.edu. (I don't check email as often over the winter break, but I will reply as soon as I am back online.)

Class enrollment. Both classes are full at this time, and any openings will be filled from One.ou.edu waiting lists.  You can find out more about that here: Myth/India Enrollment.

Readings. There are no books to purchase for these classes. For Myth-Folklore, all the readings are online in the Myth-Folklore UnTextbook. For Indian Epics, you can find out how the readings work here: Indian Epics Reading Options.

Class announcements. Once the semester begins on January 16, there will be new announcements here every day, and you will also see the announcements displayed in Canvas. Plus, you can subscribe by email. (You can use any email address you want; just make sure you reply to the "confirmation" subscription message — check your spam folder if you don't see it in your inbox.)

~ ~ ~

I'll post more here in January when I get the classes all ready to go... and meanwhile, for your listening pleasure, here is a holiday song from Pentatonix, including OU's own Kirstie Maldonado (she was a music student at OU before joining Pentatonix): Winter Wonderland/Don’t Worry; Be Happy.

Fall 2017: check back on Monday, August 14

As usual, it is my goal to get the class up and running a week early for anyone who wants to get a head start on the semester. So, if all goes well this week, you'll be able to check back here on Monday, August 14 to find out how to get started. I'll also send out an email to the class roster at that time to let everybody know it is ready to go.

In the meantime, enjoy the last days of the lovely summer break! And just for fun, here's a time-lapse video of the four seasons with Brian Eno's "Just Another Day." Summer comes, and summer goes...

Oh, it's just another day;
It's just another day on Earth.

One day, we will put it all behind.
We'll say that was just another time;
We'll say that was just another day on Earth.

Fall 2016: ready to start early if you want!

Welcome to the FALL SEMESTER, everybody! Classes begin officially on Monday, August 22 — and if you want a head start on the semester, the classes are up and running now.

Getting Started. To begin, click this Orientation link where you will find the list of assignments introducing you to the tools and websites you will be using for this online class. You need to complete the full week of Orientation activities by the due dates; as you'll see on the Orientation Week schedule, the first due date is Tuesday, August 23. If you run into any problems or have questions, let me know: laura-gibbs@ou.edu.

My Weekend Schedule. I don't check emails as often over the weekend, but on Sunday I'll try to keep an eye on my email in order to respond to any questions you have before classes really get going on Monday.

Canvas. Have you heard about the transition from D2L to the new program called Canvas? You'll be using Canvas for this class, and you may have some other classes using Canvas too. I hope you will like it! When you log on to Canvas.ou.edu, you will see this same Announcements page as the Canvas homepage.

Daily Announcements. Starting on the official first day of classes, August 22, I'll be updating the announcements every day. If you want to subscribe by email, use the "subscribe" box in the sidebar of this blog. Type in the email address you prefer and follow the instructions to confirm your subscription. Then, when the daily announcements start on August 22, you'll receive them by email each morning.

Twitter. Although there won't be new announcements until the official start of the semester, there will be new Twitter items which you can see in the sidebar of the blog or by going directly to the Twitter stream for this class: OnlineMythIndia. Twitter is a great place to connect with writers, storytellers, and musicians, along with museums and libraries; I find new things to share at Twitter every day!

Just for Fun: To finish up these early announcements, here is a video I never get tired of — a Mister Rogers remix called Garden of Your Mind. I grew up watching Mister Rogers; his show began way back in 1968 when I was four years old... and as you get started with this class, you will see that the "Mister Rogers" approach to learning and sharing is a big part of who I am today. Enjoy!

Spring 2016: ready to start early if you want!

Welcome to the SPRING SEMESTER, everybody! Classes begin officially on Tuesday, January 19 — and if you want a head start on the semester, the classes are up and running, with all the assignments for the first week and the second week ready to go.

New Year, new classes! I've made a lot of changes to both classes over the winter break, mostly thanks to great suggestions I received from last semester's students. If there is anything confusing about the instructions, broken links, something that just doesn't "fit" somehow, please let me know. There might be leftover fragments from old assignments, and the new assignments may have some rough edges that need smoothing. If you notice anything like that, let me know; you can contact me easily by email (laura-gibbs@ou.edu).

Getting Started. To get started, there is an Orientation Week with assignments to introduce you to the class and help you get familiar with the tools and websites you will be using. The Orientation Week is the same for both classes: Myth-Folklore (MLLL-3043) and Indian Epics (MLLL-4993).
Update: If this is your only online course, you do not need to do the CAS Online Orientation; I will cover all the orientation activities you need — you can ignore the email you received about the college's orietnation. If, however, you are taking this online class and some other online class, you'll need to do the college's orientation.
D2L. You will be using D2L for recording your points in the Gradebook. For the first assignment in the Orientation Week, you will learn how to "declare" your points for assignments in this class so that they show up in the D2L Gradebook. There was a big D2L maintenance update last week, but everything seems to be working fine. Still, keep a lookout for anything weird there, and if you run into any problems, let me know!

My Schedule. I try to be at work from 9-5 Monday through Friday, which means I will be quick to respond to emails during that time. I do check email in the evenings and on weekends, but I probably won't respond to those evening abd weekend emails unless it is something urgent. Meanwhile, If I am out of the office for some chunk of time during regular work hours, I'll include a note about that here in the announcements.

Daily Announcements. Starting on the official first day of classes, January 19, I'll be updating the announcements every day. If you want to subscribe by email so that you can get the announcements automatically when new ones arrive, see the "subscribe" box in the sidebar of the blog. Put in the email address you prefer, and then look for the "confirmation" email that you will get; check your spam folder if it does not show up right away (OU for some reason has a tendency to put the confirmation email in the junk folder).

Just for Fun: Here is a video I never get tired of — a Mister Rogers remix called Garden of Your Mind. I grew up watching Mister Rogers; his show started airing in 1968 when I was four years old... and as you get started with this class, you will probably see that the "Mister Rogers" approach to learning and sharing is a big part of who I am today. Enjoy!

Spring 2016: Getting a head start!

For anybody who wants to get a really early start, I think the classes are ready to go! It's Wednesday evening, January 6, and I'll be working on the classes some more in the next few days. Then, on Monday, January 11, I'll actually send around a note to everybody... but if you do want to get started now, that would be super!

Here are the instructions for getting started: Orientation Week.

If you notice anything missing, broken links, something that is not complete, just let me know. I'm excited about the changes I've made to the classes this semester based on suggestions from students last Fall, and I hope you will have a great time this Spring!

Saturday, August 22: The weekend before it all begins!

Welcome to the FALL SEMESTER, everybody! Classes begin officially on August 24 — and if you want a head start on the semester, the classes are up and running now. People in both classes have already started blogging, so you'll get a chance to see what they have been doing in the past few days as you begin the Orientation Week and create your own blog.

SATURDAY UPDATE: Thanks to everybody who got started last week; it was exciting to see all the stories and other posts! I think I managed to comment on all the posts last week, which was fun for me. Normally, you all will be doing most of the commenting and I focus on helping with your projects, but when people start during "Week Zero," that gives me a chance to read all the blog posts. Over the weekend, I usually don't leave blog comments, but I will be keeping an eye on the email, so if you have hit a snag or have any questions, let me know, and I'll get back to you when I next check my email.

New year, new classes! I've made a lot of changes to both classes this summer, mostly thanks to great suggestions I received from last year's students. If there is anything confusing about the instructions, broken links, something that just doesn't "fit" somehow, please let me know. There might be leftover fragments from old assignments, and the new assignments may have some rough edges that need smoothing. If you notice anything like that, let me know!

Getting Started. To get started, there is an Orientation Week with assignments to introduce you to the class and help you get familiar with the tools and websites you will be using. The Orientation Week is the same for both classes: Myth-Folklore (MLLL-3043) and Indian Epics (MLLL-4993).

D2L. You will be using D2L for recording your points in the Gradebook. For the first assignment in the Orientation Week, you will learn how to "declare" your points for assignments in this class so that they show up in the D2L Gradebook. There was a huge D2L upgrade over the summer, but everything seems to be working fine. Still, keep a lookout for anything weird there, and if you run into any problems, let me know!

These Announcements. Starting on August 24 with the beginning of the semester, I'll be updating the announcements every day.

Enjoy!

My Schedule. I try to be at work from 9-5 Monday through Friday, which means I will be quick to respond to emails and Twitter queries during that time. I do check email occasionally in the evenings and on weekends, but I probably won't respond to those evening/weekend emails unless it is something urgent. Meanwhile, If I am out of the office for some chunk of time during regular work hours, I'll include a note about that here in the announcements.
